Tableau Server is self-managed on Windows or Linux; a single node needs at least 8 cores (16 vCPUs) and 128 GB of RAM, and Tableau recommends running proofs of concept on Tableau Cloud.3, 4, 5, 6

Every app, SSO and two-factor, and 85M Kartlos Premium plus 850M Kartlos Standard tokens a month come with the plan, and the two-month free trial runs on your own servers.9 Per user per month, billed annually: Standard edition Creator $75, Explorer $42 and Viewer $15; Enterprise edition Creator $115, Explorer $70 and Viewer $35. Who pays Only Privileged users: the people who build integrations, the data warehouse and access permissions. Everything else is free for an unlimited number of users: report and dashboard builders, Mind builders, Oda users, viewers and subscribers. With 1,000 report developers and 10,000 viewers, none of those seats costs anything.9 Every named user holds a Creator, Explorer or Viewer license, and every deployment needs at least one Creator. Broad viewer access is available through capacity-based Viewer blocks on Tableau Cloud or compute-based licensing in 8-core units on Tableau Server, both priced by sales.1, 2, 4
Where the data lives Lake and Warehouse tables live in ClickHouse on your own servers, columnar and ZSTD-compressed, and each table shows its real compressed size. Every chart, export and subscription queries them live, with no extracts to schedule and no dataset refresh, and integers beyond 2^53 stay exact on screen. Workbooks query sources through live connections or through extracts refreshed on a schedule. Tableau Cloud reaches data inside a private network through Tableau Bridge, a client installed behind the customer's firewall.10
Getting data in 22 built-in source types: MSSQL, Postgres, Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, ClickHouse, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Azure SQL, Athena, MongoDB, Firestore, Firebase Realtime Database, S3, RabbitMQ, Webhook and CSV, TSV, JSON, Parquet and Excel files. Connect Any API has AI build a connector for any REST, OData or GraphQL API from its docs, and a connector agent writes and tests custom Python connectors. No fee per connector or synced row. Tableau-supplied connectors for databases, files and cloud apps, plus partner-built connectors on the Tableau Exchange. The REST API Connector is generally available in Tableau Server, Desktop and Prep and was announced as coming to Tableau Cloud.11, 12, 13
Data preparation and warehouse A Lake and a Warehouse in the same OS. Eight Lake load patterns are a setting. Warehouse dimensions and facts get their DDL on Deploy, nine load patterns with generated load SQL, SCD Type 2 history as a switch, a duplicate-key check on every load and a Test Run on real data. Workflows order themselves from dependencies, retry up to 10 times and alert Email, Slack, Discord or Google Chat. Tableau Prep Builder, included for Creators, builds .tfl flows that clean and shape data, which Creators publish, run and schedule on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server. Data Management, included from the Enterprise edition, adds virtual connections and data policies.2, 4, 14
Calculations SQL, the language analysts and AI already write. Measures and calculated columns are ClickHouse SQL with window functions; the Measure builder offers 130 recipes from column pickers; AI writes a measure or a column from a sentence; and a rename rewrites and re-validates every dependent measure in one transaction.17, 18 Tableau's own calculation language: calculated fields built from basic expressions, Level of Detail expressions (FIXED, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE) and table calculations. Tableau Agent in web authoring explains and creates calculations, on Tableau Cloud in the Cloud+ Edition and the Tableau+ Bundle.15, 16, 2
Metrics you can trust Semantic models with relationships, a diagram, Docs and History. Each measure carries up to 50 tests on live data (expected values, invariants, a source-of-truth query), model Health runs five check families, and Model AI shows the impacted reports and a measure's numbers before and after every change it proposes.20 Shared definitions live in published data sources and Tableau Pulse metrics. Tableau Knowledge, generally available in Tableau Cloud+ and Tableau+ since release 2026.3, links data assets into governed knowledge graphs for AI agents, and Tableau Semantics comes with Tableau Next.2, 19
Custom visuals Custom interactive visuals you create with AI on the VDK (Visual Development Kit). Custom Visual AI writes a tile from a sentence or a picture, the custom visual Studio gives live preview and 12 bundled libraries (d3, ECharts, Vega and three.js among them), and every custom visual cross-filters, acts as a slicer and exports. The Visual library versions them for the whole organization and starts with 10 ready-made animated and 3D visuals.23 Viz Extensions add new viz types to the Marks card. Developers build them in JavaScript and HTML with the Tableau Extensions API, and authors add them from the Tableau Exchange or as local .trex files.21, 22
AI agents More than 20 purpose-built AI agents share more than 250 tools. Report Builder AI builds a dashboard page from a description or a screenshot in minutes; Model AI writes measures and calculated columns; AI Minds answer questions by writing and running SQL on governed tables, every step shown with its SQL; Builder Minds load sources and build the warehouse under approval. Kartlos tokens come with the plan.24 Tableau Agent assists in authoring, Prep, Catalog and Tableau Pulse; on Tableau Cloud it is included in the Cloud+ Edition and the Tableau+ Bundle, and on Tableau Server it covers authoring and Prep with the customer's own LLM. Tableau Agent in Dashboards is in beta in release 2026.3, and Tableau MCP is in every edition.2, 4, 19
AI and your data DataMind's AI gateway sends model calls only to zero-data-retention endpoints and denies provider data collection, so nothing a Mind sends is stored by DataMind or the model provider. Columns marked as personal data reach the model as tokens while people see real values, PII Shield checks what people send on your own servers, and every AI request is logged in your own database. On Tableau Cloud, AI requests pass the Einstein Trust Layer, with zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Azure OpenAI, pattern-based PII masking and toxicity scoring. On Tableau Server, Tableau Agent uses the customer's own LLM provider, and those requests do not go through the Einstein Trust Layer or its PII masking.25, 26, 27
Row-level security and governance Object, column and row rules compile into per-role ClickHouse views, so the same limits hold in the SQL editor, DataPrism, AI Minds and external tools. Semantic models add row-level security with View as, each subscription copy renders under its recipient's rows, and the request and AI audit logs stay in your own database.29 Row-level security uses user filters, the database's own security or, with Data Management, data policies on virtual connections that filter live and extract queries, which Tableau recommends where available. Data Management and Advanced Management are included from the Enterprise edition.28, 14, 2
Exports, delivery and report files Every visual has a native streaming download of its whole result, even a billion rows as CSV or TSV, plus Export Excel, and every chart is an API (CSV, JSON, Parquet) under the report's row rules. Reports export to PDF and PowerPoint as rendered, email subscriptions send PDF, PowerPoint or Excel up to 24 times a day, Slides decks open in PowerPoint with native, editable charts, and a whole report travels as a .dataprism file.32, 33, 34 Export to PowerPoint turns selected sheets into static PNG images, one per slide; views also download as PDF, images and crosstabs, and workbooks download for Tableau Desktop.     The databases, warehouses and files your Tableau workbooks read connect to the Lake on day one: SQL Server, Postgres, Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Azure SQL, Athena, MongoDB, S3 and CSV, Excel and Parquet drops are among the 22 built-in sources, and Connect Any API builds any REST, OData or GraphQL source with AI. Data that only lives in a Tableau extract comes over as a CSV export loaded as a file source.

  2. Model once

    A semantic model goes over the Lake or Warehouse tables. Model AI adds the BI tables, sets the fact table, the joins and the measures, each change on a card with an undo, and the Warehouse Builder Mind can build a governed star schema checked against control totals you already trust.

  3. Write the calculations again in SQL

    Describe each calculated field in plain language and Model AI writes it as a SQL measure or calculated column, or pick one of 130 recipes in the Measure builder. Measure tests then pin each number to the value your team expects.

  4. Rebuild each dashboard from its screenshot

    New report with AI or Report Builder marks every element of the screenshot on a plan card and rebuilds the page on your model in minutes. Custom Visual AI rebuilds a Viz Extension or a bespoke chart from its picture on the VDK, and from then on a report travels as a .dataprism file.
